The execution will change depending on if you’re currently in a role and ready for something new within your organization vs. someone who is currently between jobs, or looking for a change, but the main strategy I recommend is the same.

You’ve got to put on your PR hat and get in the news cycle. You want people talking about you when you’re not in the room. You want to create some momentum. You want to open doors. The more quality chats you have, the more doors will open. I very much do not mean generic outreach with a vague lack luster how are you message. Come on! You work in media or marketing you need to lean into those same skills you use with clients on solving your own business problems.

Before you start your PR campaign, you need to know:

  • What is the objective/job you want? It’s ok to have a few different roles in mind but you should narrow it down.

  • Who is the decision maker and who are their influencers?

  • Who do you know that knows them?

  • What would someone in that new role you want need to be known for? If you don’t know or aren’t sure, read a bunch of job descriptions for those roles in any market. Find people on LinkedIn in who have a similar role and read their bio and accomplishments.

  • When you are out doing PR make sure you have reflected on your accomplishments and the experience and skills you have demonstrated that align with this next move. Focus on sharing these stories.

  • What kinds of problems will someone in that role be solving? Do your research. Ask your friends. Brainstorm. Reflect on your own success stories where you have demonstrated solving similar problems.

  • What are some ways that success will be measured? This is really about figuring out what matters to the leadership team - how they are evaluated - and understanding how your work is tied to their success.

  • What impacts the bottom line? Understand the business side. A positive impact to the bottom line is the ultimate objective.

By approaching your networking intentionally with a clear strategy,  putting on your PR hat and getting in the news cycle you will begin rebranding your current self into the future self who lands a new role. The best time to start was long before you needed to, but the next best time to start is now.
